Letter from Leaders
“Words are containers for power, you choose what kind of power they carry.” These brilliant words of Joyce Meyer, I keep close to my heart. These words are pertinent to every aspect of our lives. Maybe this is a gentle reminder to a mother scolding a young child, a coach providing guidance to an impressionable teen, a co-worker giving advice about a home situation or maybe it is the way you speak of a person or even a place. Your words are impactful.
Many in our community haven’t had the opportunity to understand that not only does the Coshocton Port Authority work with existing businesses, but we market our community to new business. I have been asked which is the harder of the two tasks. While the work is entirely different, connecting to new business prospects can be the hardest task. What happens when we have made that connection? The hardest part has been completed, we did get their attention right? Wrong. Now we are in an elimination game. These companies are looking at multiple sites, in various locations, all rolling out the red carpet for a site visit.
Recently, while hosting a site visit the potential company asked to meet a local supplier at a coffee shop prior to viewing the site. The coffee shop was full of locals enjoying the incredible pastries and coffee while discussing topics of Coshocton. Would you have realized what business discussions were happening beside you? What would your table discussion have been? The Port Authority has two employees, five board members, and a financial advisor and we have key partners in economic development. YOU are a partner in Economic Development, a key part of our Coshocton marketing team.
A company looking to invest in our community not only looks, but they also listen to the people of that community. They listen to the people that chose to spend their life there. After all, you are their potential workforce, their talent. They value your opinion. They may listen to that conversation at the table beside them, to the person standing in line with them at the local drug store. Maybe they view a recently published article. Our community is what we believe it to be.
I believe we are a resilient community that has an amazing amount of potential for growth. We have tremendous people doing incredible things right here in Coshocton. Be a part of our team!
